I.                   Purpose

 

To establish a policy for the secure handling of resident’s cash and valuables while in residence at Tarry House, Inc.

 

II.                Policy

 

It is the policy of Tarry House, Inc. to offer safekeeping of resident’s cash and valuables.  The Agency will inform residents, representative payees and or guardians of the policy and procedures related to the management of resident’s cash and valuables at the time of the initial interview or upon subsequent admission.  The policy and procedures will be followed while the person lives in one of the Tarry House Facilities.  At the time of discharge, arrangements shall to be made for the return of all cash, checks and valuables.

 

III.             Procedure  (Tarry House Facility)

 

A.     Upon admission to Tarry House, a valuables envelope will be completed by the site supervisor or designee, the resident and or the guardian.  The contents are noted on the envelope and the resident or guardian is asked to sign the envelope to indemnify agreement with the contents list. Anytime additional cash, checks or valuables are brought to the staff by the resident, representative payee or guardian, a written description will be added to the envelope accompanied by the initials of the resident, representative payee or guardian.

B.     The maximum amount of cash that a resident may have in his/her possession at any one time shall be determined by the resident, guardian, treatment team and or representative payee.

C.     Residents who choose to carry an excessive amount of cash on his/her person will be verbally reminded about the dangers of carrying such amounts, and encouraged to place the excess money in the valuables envelop and have staff lock his/her money in the Tarry House safe.

D.    In the event the site supervisor is not available, and the administrative office is closed, the resident shall be responsible for safeguarding his/her valuables until the next business day.  It is encouraged that cash, checks, and or valuables be delivered to residents during normal business hours, Monday thru Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. 

E.     Tarry House shall not be held responsible for lost or stolen monies or valuables. 

F.      For staff’s safety, no staff, other than the site supervisor, business manager and executive director, shall accept any resident’s money, checks and or valuables.  Staff found in violation of this policy will be subject to disciplinary action.

G.    Residents may request an accounting of his/her valuables or cash in the valuables envelope that has been safe-guarded in the agency safe at any time during regular business hours.

 

H.    Upon discharge, resident’s valuables and cash will be turned over to him/her unless otherwise indicated by the person’s representative payee and or guardian.  The valuables record will be placed in the resident’s permanent file.

IV.              Procedure  (Respite Facility)

 

A. All residents of the Respite Facility will be giving a storage box with a combination lock as well as a closet, also with a combination lock.  All residents will be encouraged to lock up their valuables.
