I.                   Purpose

 

To prevent serious consequences of medication errors and/or drug reactions with regard to the persons served safety. 

 

II.                Policy

 

It is the policy of Tarry House, Inc. to provide secure storage for all prescribed medications.  In the event that a person does ingest an overdose of medication, or experience a drug reaction, Tarry House staff will notify the treating physician(s), immediately following any emergency care procedures.

 

 

III.             Responsibility

 

The staff person witnessing the negative drug reaction or drug overdose is responsible for implementing the emergency procedures.  The Site’s Program Manager and/or Recovery Specialist will be notified as soon as the person is being cared for by emergency personnel. 

 

IV.              Procedure

 

Staff on duty will call appropriate emergency personnel by utilizing the 911 emergency system and implement any immediate first aid.   Staff will then notify the Program Manager and /or the Recovery Specialist after the person is being cared for.  Others will be notified, as needed.  The telephone number of the Poison Control Center is 800-872-5111. Notification will then be made to the treating physician, by way of the person’s case manager or the case manager on call.  A major incident report will be completed and the Executive Director will be notified as soon as possible as needed.
